The Evolution of OMSI

OMSI's origins trace back to 1944 with the establishment of the Oregon Museum Foundation, aiming to create a space dedicated to science and industry. The museum first opened its doors in 1949 in a house on NE Hassalo Street, featuring a modest collection of exhibits. By 1950, it introduced the Pacific Northwest's first public planetarium, marking a significant milestone in its growth. 

In 1958, responding to increasing public interest, OMSI relocated to a new facility in Washington Park, adjacent to the Portland Zoo. This move allowed for expanded exhibits and the inclusion of a planetarium. However, by the mid-1980s, the museum had outgrown this space, prompting plans for a more expansive location. 

In 1992, OMSI unveiled its current 219,000-square-foot facility on SE Water Avenue, integrating the historic PGE turbine building. This location features a 330-seat OMNIMAX theater, a planetarium, and numerous interactive exhibits, solidifying its status as a premier science museum.

OMSI offers a diverse array of exhibits and labs designed to ignite curiosity and foster learning. Visitors can engage with hands-on displays, attend live demonstrations, and participate in workshops covering topics from physics to environmental science.
